This was a project I worked on with a friend who was hired to create a series of animations for a movie called The Secret Handshake 2015 starring Kevin Sorbo and Amy Grant. It’s a family comedy about a Dad who’s trying to help his son transition from a child to man.
During a number of the scenes Sorbo’s character discusses various rites of passage. I created the characters and my friend Toby Holcomb did all the animations. Here are a few of those samples.
I usually started out the process by drawing then scanning and redrawing the assets in Adobe Illustrator. They are segmented so as to make them easier to manipulate in After Effects.
This was one of my favorite animations Toby did for this project as I really thought it was funny.
Here we see the adults on a camping trip facing the “Hookman” character from their childhoods.
The Secret Handshake street scene
This is the last asset for the movie. The following are samples from various other unrelated projects.
Illustration for a business card.
Earlier concept that was not used.
Created for a lottery promotion.
Ashford Homes wall cross section
While I worked for Piedmont Graphics I had occasion to be tasked with recreating a cross section of a wall for a brochure. The client had lost or misplaced the original digital artwork and all that they had access to was a low quality printed sample.
Freelance Blog Post for a friend
A friend who authored a blog in NYC asked me to create an illustration for him. As I recall it was about the odd sub-culture that was a product of enthusiastic advocates of Urban Agriculture. I believe it was satirizing the ever increasing attitude some members had towards others they deemed not dedicated enough to the cause.
Reworking of high school Mascot
While at Piedmont Graphics I had an opportunity to recreate a more modern interpretation of a local high school mascot that years earlier had been hand drawn by a former student.
